A multimeter places several test devices in one unit. For example, you can test the voltage on a printed circuit board then examine the current on another device. A simple turn of the switch is all you need to change measurement types. A digital multimeter is especially helpful because it provides four or more decimal places for extreme measurement accuracy.

For those difficult to reach areas, try a clamp meter. Operating like a multimeter, you don't hold the probes for measurements, but simply clamp the device to a wire. You keep your hands free with this measurement device.
